Dr. Matthew Black is an oral surgeon who strives to provide every patient with compassionate care. During college, Dr. Black explored various career paths. This included training to become an EMT, which exposed him to surgical procedures, patient care, and anesthesia. As an active-duty member of the military, he was deployed to Iraq where his friend suggested a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Black began shadowing the different dental specialties and was drawn to oral and maxillofacial surgery for its complexity as well as the ability to safely administer anesthesia.
Searching for a practice with a team-oriented mentality and dedication to providing excellent care, Dr. Black quickly became interested in joining the Columbia Basin Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons team. He believes in treating others with kindness and respect. He has found that same philosophy among the experts at this practice. The surgeons here are genuine, sincere, and treat patients like members of their own family. Thus, he is excited to care for patients in his new community—and home.
When you visit Dr. Black, you can expect to feel welcomed and heard. He understands patient anxiety and works hard to establish trust so that patients can feel comfortable. This means actively listening and taking the time to educate them regarding their treatment options. To him, one of the most rewarding aspects of his practice is learning that his patients have had an exceptional surgical experience.
Dr. Black earned his bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Brigham Young University. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center.
Dr. Matthew Black is a proud member of several organizations, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the Washington State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (WSSOMS). Additionally, upon graduation from dental school, he was elected to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. He is a candidate for board certification by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) and looks forward to achieving this prestigious certification soon.
When he is not at work, Dr. Black loves spending time with his wife and four children. Together, they enjoy just about anything that gets them outdoors and gaining new experiences. If you know a good dad joke, he would enjoy hearing it!
